What is Dermaplaning?

Updated: Feb 5, 2020

Many of my clients have had questions about Dermaplaning so here are the most common questions answered. It may appear to be a controversial treatment to some because they may assume it's the same as shaving and worry that the peach fuzz on their face would grow back thicker and darker. Is dermaplaning the same as shaving? Is it safe? What are the benefits?

What exactly is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a form of mechanical exfoliation using a sterile surgical steel blade to gently remove dead skin build up and vellus hair (peach fuzz). It is not painful, in fact most of my clients find it relaxing.

*Unlike microdermabrasion and chemical peels, it is safe for all skin types and most skin conditions, including sensitive skin, rosacea, those who deal with Telangiectasia (dilated blood vessels) and some types of acne.

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?

The benefits include:

· Improved skin texture

· Better absorption of skincare products

· Reduction of fine lines

· Smoother makeup application

· Increase in skin cell turnover

· Reduction of breakouts and clogged pores

· Instant & Lasting Glow

Will my facial hair grow back thicker or darker?

Vellus hair will NOT grow back thicker, darker, or faster. It will grow back the same as it was- peach fuzz. If you have darker terminal hairs they will grow back the same as well. Because the hair bulb is not being removed from the follicle, it will not change in texture.

Is it the same as shaving?

Simply put, no, dermaplane is not the same as shaving. As mentioned above, using a brand new sterile surgical steel blade, results in physical exfoliation. The razors for home use have no exfoliation benefits and are simply for the removal of hair; these razors are more dull and blunt, often resulting in ingrown hairs and possible damage to the skin.

Besides, a Dermaplane Facial includes an enzyme exfoliation, extractions if necessary, a nourishing mask, serums, moisturizers and is deeply relaxing - you can't get that at home!

Please remember, dermaplaning should only be done by a licensed professional.

I have seen amazing results with dermaplaning and I would be happy to answer your questions or book an appointment for you to experience the benefits for yourself.
